How do dermal fillers work?
Skin is composed of several layers, including the dermis layer. The dermis becomes thinner as we age, and wrinkles develop as volume is lost. Dermal fillers plump up overlying skin and replace and enhance volume through injecting volumising substances into the dermis.
What are dermal fillers made of?
Dermal fillers can be separated into absorbable and non-absorbable, and are administered based on the body’s capacity to break down the gel.

Temporary Absorbable Fillers
Dermal fillers are commonly made from proteins that are naturally-occurring in human skin and body. The fillers are used to replace the volume loss that occurs as we age, and improve skin hydration and quality. Dermal fillers are synthetically produced and are not derived from animals. Are there any reasons why I can’t have dermal fillers?
Similar to most cosmetic procedures, dermal fillers are not suitable for women who are currently pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive. The same goes for people with a known sensitivity to the active ingredients in the desired filler, as well as those with certain autoimmune conditions. To determine your suitability, your past and present medical history, as well as your past cosmetic history, will be assessed by your injector.
